Deci and Ryan (Self-Determination Theory)

Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory (SDT) proposes that people are most motivated and satisfied when they experience three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy (control over their actions), competence (feeling capable), and relatedness (meaningful connections with others). When these needs are met, individuals engage more fully and persistently in activities, leading to greater well-being. Conversely, when these needs are unmet, motivation diminishes, and well-being can suffer. SDT emphasizes the importance of supporting these needs to foster intrinsic motivation, personal growth, and overall psychological health across various life domains.
