Decay Law

The Decay Law, often referred to in contexts like radioactive decay, describes how unstable atoms decrease in quantity over time. It states that the rate at which these atoms decay is proportional to the number of atoms still present. This means that if you start with a large amount of a substance, it will take time to reduce to half its amount—this is called the half-life. Over successive half-lives, the quantity continues to halve, leading to a predictable pattern in the reduction of the substance over time. It's a fundamental concept in physics and chemistry.
