Decannulation
Decannulation is the process of removing a tracheostomy tube once a person’s airway and breathing have improved enough to be managed without it. A tracheostomy involves making an opening in the neck into the windpipe to help with breathing. Decannulation is carefully planned and monitored by healthcare professionals to ensure the patient can breathe, cough, and clear secretions effectively on their own. It usually occurs after the individual’s condition stabilizes and they demonstrate the ability to maintain a patent airway, adequate oxygenation, and protection from aspiration, signaling readiness to breathe independently.
