Deaf President Now
Deaf President Now (DPN) was a protest in 1988 at Gallaudet University, the world's only university for the Deaf. Students demanded that the university appoint a deaf person as president, as they felt deaf leadership was essential for respect and effective communication. Until then, the university's leadership was predominantly hearing. The protest lasted several days, garnering national attention, and resulted in the appointment of I. King Jordan as the first deaf president of Gallaudet. DPN highlighted issues of Deaf culture, identity, and self-advocacy, empowering the Deaf community worldwide.
