David Hicks
David Hicks is an Australian who became widely known after being captured in Afghanistan in 2001 and detained at Guantanamo Bay by the U.S. government. He was accused of involvement in terrorism-related activities but maintained he was innocent and was subjected to controversial treatment, including allegations of torture. Hicks eventually pleaded guilty to some charges in a plea deal, was released in 2007, and returned to Australia. His case raised important debates about due process, human rights, and the legal standards applied in post-9/11 counterterrorism efforts.
