Daughters of Bilitis
The Daughters of Bilitis was the first nationwide social and political organization for lesbian women in the United States, founded in 1955. It aimed to provide a safe space for women questioning or identifying as lesbian, promote understanding and acceptance, and advocate for LGBTQ rights. During a time when homosexuality was widely stigmatized and often criminalized, the organization offered support, education, and social connection while emphasizing discretion. Its work helped lay the foundation for future LGBTQ advocacy and contributed to the broader movement for LGBTQ rights and visibility.
