Darkness adaptation is the process by which our eyes adjust from bright light to darkness, allowing us to see better in low-light conditions. When moving from a well-lit environment to a darker one, the eyes take time to increase sensitivity, mainly by regenerating chemicals in the retina called visual pigments. This adjustment can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Overall, darkness adaptation enhances our ability to see in dim environments by optimizing the eye’s sensitivity to faint light signals.
