Daitō-ryū

Daitō-ryū is a traditional Japanese martial art focused on the principles of effective, natural body movement and aiki—harmonizing with an opponent’s force. It emphasizes flowing techniques, joint locks, and throws, often using minimal effort for maximum effect. Developed in the 15th century, it aims to neutralize attacks calmly and efficiently. Practitioners study principles of balance, timing, and leverage, with the goal of controlling or redirecting an opponent’s energy rather than brute strength. Daitō-ryū has influenced modern martial arts, including Aikido, and promotes practical self-defense rooted in classical technique and philosophy.
