Dōgen (a.k.a. Dōgen Kigen)

Dōgen (Dōgen Kigen) was a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and founder of the Sōtō Zen tradition in the 13th century. He emphasized that enlightenment is achieved through direct, mindful practice of everyday activities, especially meditation (zazen). Dōgen believed that true understanding arises from experiencing life fully in each present moment, not just intellectual study or ritual. His teachings highlight non-duality, the interconnectedness of all things, and the importance of sustained, disciplined practice. Dōgen's writings, such as "Shōbōgenzō," continue to influence Zen practice and emphasize the profundity of ordinary life as an expression of enlightenment.
