cystic echinococcosis

Cystic echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is an infection caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. People usually become infected by ingesting eggs from contaminated food, water, or contact with infected animals like dogs. Inside the body, the eggs develop into cysts, primarily in the liver and lungs, which can grow over years. These cysts may cause symptoms like pain or swelling, or remain asymptomatic. Treatment typically involves surgery or medication to remove or inactivate the cysts. Preventive measures include good hygiene, controlling infection in animals, and proper food handling.
