Custody Laws

Custody laws determine who has legal responsibility and decision-making authority for a child's welfare. Courts aim to prioritize the child's best interests, considering factors like each parent's ability to provide a stable environment, the child's relationship with each parent, and any history of abuse or neglect. Custody can be awarded as legal custody (making major decisions about the child's life) and physical custody (where the child lives). The arrangement can be sole or joint, based on what the court finds best for the child's wellbeing. These laws help ensure children maintain meaningful relationships with both parents whenever possible.
