Cult of the Supreme Being
The Cult of the Supreme Being was a religious movement initiated in 1794 during the French Revolution by revolutionary leader Maximilien Robespierre. It aimed to promote moral virtue and civic unity through the worship of a Supreme Being, emphasizing reason and the natural religion over traditional Christian beliefs. The cult sought to replace religious superstition with rational faith, fostering patriotism and moral improvement among citizens. Although it was relatively short-lived, it reflected the Revolution's efforts to establish a new, secular moral order aligned with revolutionary ideals.
