Cue-Dependent Forgetting
Cue-dependent forgetting occurs when we are unable to retrieve stored memories because the right cues or triggers are missing. Think of a memory like a file stored in a cabinet; without the right label or cue—such as a specific word, sound, or context—you might struggle to find it. This form of forgetting suggests that all memories are linked to certain cues, and when those cues are absent or not present at the time of recall, retrieving the memory becomes difficult or fails altogether. Essentially, the memory exists but can't be accessed without the proper prompts.
