Croup
Croup is a common respiratory condition mostly affecting young children, caused by viral infections that lead to swelling around the voice box (larynx) and windpipe (trachea). This swelling results in a distinctive barking cough, hoarse voice, and sometimes difficulty breathing or noisy inhalation called stridor. Symptoms often worsen at night and improve with supportive care, such as humidified air or hydration. Most cases are mild and resolve on their own, but severe cases can require medical attention to ensure clear breathing. Croup is contagious and typically occurs following symptoms of a cold or upper respiratory infection.
