Crotalinae

Crotalinae, commonly known as pit vipers, are a subgroup of venomous snakes characterized by a heat-sensing pit located between their eyes and nostrils. These pits help them detect warm-blooded prey by sensing infrared radiation. The group includes rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths, primarily found in the Americas. They have slit-shaped pupils and rely on their warning displays, like rattling or striking, to defend themselves. Their venom is used to immobilize prey and aid digestion, and while bites can be serious, prompt medical treatment is effective. Crotalinae are important predators within their ecosystems.
