Criterion-Referenced Tests

Criterion-referenced tests measure a person’s performance based on a set standard or specific criteria, rather than comparing them to others. The goal is to determine whether an individual has achieved a particular skill or knowledge level, such as passing a driving test or meeting a curriculum standard. These tests focus on what the test-taker can do relative to predefined goals, providing clear information about strengths and areas needing improvement. Unlike norm-referenced tests, which rank individuals against each other, criterion-referenced assessments evaluate proficiency against established benchmarks.
