Crime writing conventions

Crime writing conventions refer to the standard elements and structures commonly found in crime fiction and non-fiction. These include a central crime or mystery, an investigation led by a protagonist—often a detective or amateur sleuth—and various suspects with motives. The narrative typically unfolds with clues and red herrings that challenge the reader to solve the crime alongside the characters. Themes of justice, morality, and the human condition are often explored, while suspense and tension build to a climax, leading to a resolution where the crime is solved, and often, a deeper truth is revealed.
