cricoid pressure
Cricoid pressure, also known as Sellick's maneuver, is a technique used by healthcare providers during anesthesia or emergency airway management. It involves gently applying pressure to the cricoid cartilage at the front of the neck to compress the esophagus. This helps prevent stomach contents from regurgitating into the airway, reducing the risk of choking or aspiration during intubation or unconsciousness. The pressure must be firm enough to occlude the esophagus without obstructing breathing or blood flow. Properly performed, it enhances patient safety during procedures requiring airway control.
