Cretan War
The Cretan War (1645–1669) was a conflict between Venice and the Ottoman Empire over control of the island of Crete. Venice, which had ruled Crete for centuries, sought to maintain its territory, while the Ottomans aimed to expand their empire into the Mediterranean. The war involved intense sieges and battles, with the Ottomans eventually capturing most of Crete, except for a few fortified Venetian holdings. The conflict ended with the Treaty of Candia, resulting in Venetian withdrawal from Crete and Ottoman dominance of the island, significantly shifting power in the eastern Mediterranean.
