CREST trial

The CREST (Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial) compared two procedures—carotid endarterectomy (CEA), a surgical removal of plaque from neck arteries, and carotid artery stenting (CAS), a less invasive method using a tiny tube to place a mesh to open blocked arteries—for treating narrowed carotid arteries that increase stroke risk. The study aimed to determine which method had better outcomes in preventing strokes and death. Results showed both procedures are effective, but CEA had slightly lower stroke risk in some patients, while stenting was safer for others. The choice depends on individual patient factors.
