crenellations

Crenellations are the regular, Notched battlements found at the top of medieval castle walls and towers. They consist of alternating high sections called merlons and low sections called crenels or embrasures. This design allowed defenders to observe and fire upon attackers from the safety of the merlons while the crenels provided gaps for shooting or observing. Crenellations served both functional defensive purposes and defensive aesthetics, symbolizing strength and fortification. Today, they are often seen as historic architectural features that evoke medieval castles and fortresses.
