COVID-19 related anosmia
COVID-19-related anosmia is the loss of the sense of smell caused by infection with the coronavirus. The virus can affect the olfactory system by damaging or disrupting the sensory cells in the nasal cavity or interfering with how the brain processes smells. This occurs because the virus can enter nerve pathways, leading to inflammation and temporary or sometimes prolonged impairment of smell. It is a common symptom of COVID-19 and may serve as an early indicator of infection. Most individuals recover their sense of smell over time, although recovery duration varies.
