Court of Areopagus

The Court of Areopagus was an ancient Athens judicial council composed mainly of former archons (magistrates). It originally handled serious criminal and homicide cases but evolved over time into a body that also reviewed accusations of misconduct by public officials. Its authority was rooted in tradition and reputation, and it played a significant role in maintaining moral and legal standards in Athens. Although its influence waned with the rise of democratic institutions, the Areopagus remained a symbol of sovereignty and justice in classical Athens.
