Cottonmouth (Water moccasin)

The cottonmouth, or water moccasin, is a venomous snake native to the southeastern United States. It is commonly found in freshwater habitats like lakes, rivers, and swamps. Recognizable by its broad, heavy body, dark coloration, and distinctive white interior of the mouth—hence the name "cottonmouth." It may stand its ground when threatened, displaying defensive behavior, but generally prefers to escape. Its venom is potent, used to subdue prey such as fish and small animals. While bites are rare, they can cause significant pain and tissue damage, requiring prompt medical attention.
