Cosyntropin stimulation test
The Cosyntropin stimulation test is a medical procedure used to assess how well the adrenal glands respond to stimulation. Cosyntropin is a synthetic version of a hormone called ACTH that signals the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, a vital stress hormone. During the test, a healthcare provider gives the patient an injection of cosyntropin and measures blood cortisol levels before and after to see if the adrenal glands respond appropriately. This helps diagnose conditions like adrenal insufficiency or Addison’s disease, where the glands don’t produce enough cortisol.
