Cosmological Arguments for the Existence of God

Cosmological arguments for the existence of God contend that everything that exists has a cause. Since the universe exists, it must have a cause outside itself, which many identify as God. The most common version, the Kalam Cosmological Argument, asserts that because the universe began to exist, it cannot have caused itself; therefore, there must be a first cause, which is argued to be God. This argument emphasizes that, just as events in the universe have causes, the existence of the universe itself must trace back to something transcendent and uncaused.
