Cortical and trabecular bone
Cortical bone, also known as compact bone, is the dense, solid outer layer of bones that provides strength and support, making up about 80% of skeletal mass. Trabecular bone, or spongy bone, is the inner, porous part with a lattice-like structure that helps absorb shocks and distribute stress. Trabecular bone is lighter and more flexible, allowing for metabolic activities like calcium exchange. Together, they work to provide a sturdy yet adaptable framework that supports movement, protects vital organs, and maintains mineral balance in the body.
