Corps of Discovery

The Corps of Discovery was an expedition launched by the United States in 1804, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Its purpose was to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean, and gather information about the land, resources, and native peoples. The team traveled over 8,000 miles, crossing mountains, rivers, and plains, documenting plants, animals, and geography. Their journey significantly expanded knowledge about the western part of North America and paved the way for future exploration and settlement.
