Cornelius Vanderbilt

Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) was an influential American industrialist who made his fortune in the shipping and railroad industries. Originally a successful ferryman in New York, he expanded into steamships, dominating coastal shipping. Later, he shifted his focus to railroads, consolidating and improving several lines, which helped connect major cities and facilitate commerce. Known as "The Commodore," Vanderbilt was a key figure in the rise of American transportation infrastructure during the 19th century. His business practices laid the groundwork for modern corporate America, and he became one of the wealthiest individuals of his time.
