Cornelis de Houtman
Cornelis de Houtman was a Dutch explorer and navigator from the late 16th century who played a key role in opening up trade between Europe and Southeast Asia. In 1595, he led an ambitious voyage to reach Asia by sailing around Africa's southern tip, pioneering the route that later became the famous Dutch East India Company trade route. His journey helped establish direct contact with the Indonesian archipelago, expanding European knowledge of the region and boosting spice trade. Despite facing hardships and losing ships, de Houtman's efforts significantly influenced Dutch exploration and commerce in Asia.
