Corexit (dispersant)
Corexit is a chemical dispersant used to break up oil spills in the ocean, making the oil easier to remove or degrade. It contains surfactants that reduce the surface tension between oil and water, causing the oil to form smaller droplets that disperse throughout the water column. This process can help protect coastlines and marine life from the immediate impact of large surface oil slicks. However, the chemical itself can be toxic to marine organisms and humans, leading to health and environmental concerns. Corexit was notably used during the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010.
