Copper metabolism
Copper metabolism involves the body's process of absorbing, transporting, utilizing, and excreting copper, an essential mineral supporting enzymes involved in energy production, iron metabolism, and nerve health. Copper is absorbed from food in the intestines and bound to proteins like ceruloplasmin for transport in the blood. It’s delivered to tissues where it's used or stored. The body regulates copper levels through excretion mainly via the digestive system. Proper copper balance is crucial; too little can cause deficiency symptoms like anemia, while too much can lead to toxicity and related health issues.
