Coonan Cross Oath
The Coonan Cross Oath was a significant event in 1653, when a group of St. Thomas Christians in India publicly vowed not to accept Portuguese control or Catholic authority over their church. Frustrated by forced conversions and Portuguese interference, they swore to remain independent in faith and church governance. This act of defiance led to the eventual establishment of the independent Malankara Church, separate from Portuguese influence and Roman Catholic control. The oath marked a pivotal moment in the community's efforts to preserve their religious traditions and autonomy.
