Convergent Boundaries

Convergent boundaries are locations where two tectonic plates move toward each other and collide. This collision causes the Earth's crust to buckle and fold, forming mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches, or volcanic activity. Depending on the types of plates involved—continental-continental, oceanic-oceanic, or continental-oceanic—the results vary, such as mountain formation or volcanic islands. These boundaries are significant because they are sites where the Earth's surface is actively changing, often causing earthquakes, mountain building, and volcanic eruptions as the planet's interior mass redistributes itself.
