Controlled processing

Controlled processing refers to intentional, effortful mental activities where you consciously focus your attention to learn new skills or solve complex problems. Unlike automatic processing, which happens effortlessly and quickly (like brushing your teeth), controlled processing requires deliberate thinking, concentration, and mental effort. For example, studying for an exam or learning to drive a car involves controlled processing, as you actively direct your attention and apply conscious effort to understand and perform tasks. It is essential for new or complex activities but becomes less demanding as skills become automatic through practice.
