Contrast detection
Contrast detection is a method used by cameras to focus on a subject. It works by analyzing the difference in brightness between neighboring pixels in the image. When the contrast is high—meaning clear differences between light and dark areas—the autofocus system recognizes that the lens is focused correctly. If the contrast is low, the image is blurry, and the system adjusts the lens until contrast improves. Essentially, it "hunts" for the sharpest, most distinct edges and details, ensuring the picture is in clear focus.
