Contra rebels

The Contras were a group of rebel fighters in Nicaragua during the 1980s, opposing the socialist government of the Sandinistas. Originally composed of former soldiers and anti-communist activists, they sought to overthrow the Sandinista regime. The U.S. government supported the Contras covertly, providing funding and arms, as part of its effort to curb Soviet influence in Central America. This intervention led to a prolonged and controversial conflict, causing significant civilian suffering and political debate over foreign intervention and ethical considerations.
