Contact allergens

Contact allergens are substances that can cause an allergic reaction when they touch the skin. Common sources include certain metals (like nickel), cosmetics, fragrances, and plants (such as poison ivy). When someone sensitized to an allergen comes into contact with it, their immune system mistakenly identifies it as harmful, leading to symptoms like redness, itching, or rashes. This type of allergic reaction is called contact dermatitis. Avoiding known allergens and using protective measures can help prevent reactions for those who are sensitive.
