Constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir

The Constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was a special body formed in 1951 to create the state's own constitution. It comprised elected representatives tasked with defining Jammu and Kashmir’s political system, laws, and governance structure. This assembly operated under a unique constitutional arrangement due to the state's special status, as recognized in the Instrument of Accession signed in 1947. Over time, its authority was largely superseded, especially after August 2019, when the Indian government revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy, leading to the reorganization of the region into two separate Union Territories.
