Consent (law)
Consent in law refers to giving clear, voluntary agreement to engage in a specific act, such as a sexual activity or a contractual obligation. It must be informed, meaning all involved parties understand what they are agreeing to, and made without pressure, coercion, or deception. Consent can be withdrawn at any time. Legally, if someone acts without consent or if consent is invalid—for example, due to intoxication or manipulation—the act may be considered non-consensual and lead to criminal or civil consequences. Clear, affirmative, and ongoing communication is essential to establishing valid lawful consent.
