Congregation of the Council

The Congregation of the Council is a former department of the Roman Curia, established in 1588, responsible for advising the Pope and overseeing church discipline, customs, and clergy regulation within the Roman Catholic Church. Its primary role was to promote church reforms, ensure unity, and coordinate efforts across dioceses. Over time, its functions were gradually transferred to other Vatican departments. Today, it is primarily known as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which focuses on safeguarding doctrine. Historically, the Congregation of the Council played a key role in shaping Catholic policy and discipline during its active centuries.
