Concurrent sentences

Concurrent sentences refer to terms of imprisonment that are served at the same time. For example, if a person is sentenced to two different prison terms—one for five years and another for three years—the concurrent sentences mean the individual will serve a total of five years, not eight. This approach is often used when multiple offenses are related or occur simultaneously, allowing the court to recognize the overall culpability without excessively lengthening the prison time. This system aims to balance justice with efficiency in the penal system.
