Complications of Arthrodesis

Complications of arthrodesis, or joint fusion surgery, can include issues like infection, prolonged pain, or stiffness. Sometimes the bones don’t fuse together properly, leading to instability or the need for additional surgery. There’s also a risk that the altered joint mechanics may cause extra stress on nearby joints, possibly leading to arthritis elsewhere. Nerve or blood vessel injury during surgery is also possible, which can cause numbness or circulation problems. While many patients recover well, understanding these risks helps in making informed decisions and managing expectations.
