Combined Oral Contraceptives
Combined Oral Contraceptives (COCs), commonly called birth control pills, are medications taken by women to prevent pregnancy. They contain synthetic hormones—estrogen and progestin—that work together to stop ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovaries. They also thicken cervical mucus to block sperm and thin the uterine lining, making it less suitable for implantation. When taken correctly, COCs are highly effective and also help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce cramps, and can decrease the risk of certain cancers. It's important to use them consistently and consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
