Columbus
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean in the late 15th century, aiming to find a new route to Asia. Instead, he encountered the Americas in 1492. His expeditions, sponsored by Spain, played a significant role in opening up the New World to European exploration and colonization. Columbus is often credited with "discovering" America, although indigenous peoples had inhabited the continent for thousands of years. His voyages had profound consequences, leading to cultural exchange, trade, and, tragically, the exploitation and suffering of native populations. Today, his legacy is viewed through a critical lens.
