Colonial militia
Colonial militia were local citizen armies in the American colonies, formed to defend their communities and assist in larger military conflicts before the establishment of a standing national army. Composed of ordinary men who were often farmers or tradespeople, they were called upon during times of crisis, such as wars or threats from other nations. These militias played a key role in early American defense, providing a readily available, locally organized force that could quickly respond to threats without relying on professional soldiers. Their existence helped shape the colonies' sense of independence and self-reliance.
