College of Teachers

The College of Teachers was a professional body in the United Kingdom established in 1846 to regulate the teaching profession. It was created to establish standards for teachers, promote professional development, and uphold ethical practices. The College provided certification for qualified teachers and aimed to improve the quality of education through oversight and support. In 1906, it was replaced by the General Teaching Council, which continues to regulate teachers today. Essentially, the College of Teachers served as an early effort to professionalize and ensure quality in teaching.
