Coligny conspiracy
The Coligny conspiracy was a failed plot in 1572 by French factions, primarily led by Catherine de' Medici, aiming to eliminate Huguenot leader Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and suppress Protestant influence during the French Wars of Religion. Tensions escalated after Coligny's attempted assassination, and the conspiracy sought to preemptively strike against him and other Protestants. However, the plan was leaked, leading to the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, where thousands of Protestants were killed. Ultimately, the conspiracy underscored the intense religious conflicts and political maneuvering that fueled France's violent religious wars.
