Cold War Submarine Tactics
Cold War submarine tactics centered on stealth, intelligence, and deterrence. Submarines, especially nuclear ones, would hide underwater to avoid detection, using advanced sonar and quieting technology. They patrolled strategically to gather intelligence or track enemy vessels. Ballistic missile submarines served as a nuclear deterrent, remaining hidden to prevent nuclear conflict. Submarines also employed "shadowing" enemy ships and submarines to monitor movements without being seen. Countermeasures included anti-submarine warfare (ASW) tactics like sonar detection, depth charges, and underwater drones. The goal was to maintain strategic superiority while avoiding escalation, making submarines a critical element of Cold War military balance.
