Cohen's Social Exchange Model

Cohen’s Social Exchange Model suggests that social relationships are based on a balance of give-and-take. People engage in interactions expecting that their efforts—such as providing support, time, or resources—will be reciprocated with similar benefits. The idea is that relationships are maintained when both parties feel the exchange is fair, fostering trust and cooperation. If the exchange feels unequal, individuals may feel dissatisfied and could withdraw. Essentially, this model views social interactions as transactions aimed at mutual benefit, influencing the strength and stability of relationships.
